Cat Chat

Why do I talk to my cat Scrappy as if she’s a person?

Honestly, the answer is because I think she has way more in her furry, little noggin than others would have us believe.  In fact, right now she is climbing all over my exercise bike trying to get my attention (Feed Me NOW!)  She has something she wants and she is trying all of this negative attention to try to get it.  (Sound familiar?)

Oh, and it’s not just nonverbal communication either, sometimes she does talk to me.  Earlier today she was lying in the kitchen, all stretched out and enjoying the

sun as it was beating through the sliding glass doors.   Unfortunately, I wanted to get a couple of ice cubes for my water, (silly me) so I emptied the ice cube tray.  Apparently, this is a sound she hates because she got up and walked out of the kitchen with a disgusted “Mmrrwr”.  It was almost like a bark, really.  Yes, I got the “what for” from my kitty…I felt like she mentally gave me the middle pug…the nerve.

Maybe I think she’s a little person because we actually hide from each other…we will literally run around the house and I will hide from her.  As she comes closer, I will pop out and try to scare her.  Then she’ll do “Halloween kitty” and want to wrestle with me.  I’m ashamed to admit that she has scared me before, too, though, so it goes both ways.

One of the most embarrassing things I do is try to reason with her.  Her dinner time is 5:00 pm, and I consistently remind her of this and expect her to understand when she gets all cranky and uptight.

So, it’s true…I am guilty of anthropomorphizing my kitty – she’s my mascot for pets’ sake (typo intended), and I even named my band after her (Nina Music and the Scrappy Band).  Truthfully, we wouldn’t have it any other way.  Please tell me I’m not the only one – share your stories below.

Yours in music and kitty love,
Nina
